Clay? Paint? PEEPS

Marshmallow treats as artwork

Posted

STEVENS POINT –The Riverfront Arts Center is hosting its annual PEEPS Exhibition, a springtime tradition now in its 17th year. The exhibition runs from April 9 through Sunday, April 27, and is free and open to the public during regular gallery hours: Wednesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gallery will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
The PEEPS Exhibition invites community members of all ages to transform the familiar marshmallow treat into original works of art. Submissions include dioramas, paintings, sculptures, collages, and a wide variety of other creative formats. According to Art Director Shannon Gardner, inspiration often comes from “puns, books, songs, TV shows, movies, celebrities, and beyond.”
Gardner explained that the PEEPS show has been an annual event at the Riverfront Arts Center since 2008. “It began as a fun way to welcome spring and invite artists of all ages to get creative with a nontraditional medium—PEEPS,” she said. “It’s since become a local tradition that draws together families, friends, and coworkers to collaborate on imaginative pieces.”
Gardner noted that while the PEEPS show is one of the center’s shorter exhibitions, it consistently draws a large turnout. “Even though it’s just three weeks long, the PEEPS show regularly gathers over 1,000 visitors,” she said. “It’s always a packed house and a highlight of the season.”
In past years, the exhibition has featured up to 120 pieces, though recent shows typically include around 70 entries, allowing for a more manageable and cohesive display. “We would love more 2D artwork to hang on the walls,” Gardner added.

One feature of the exhibition that continues to engage visitors is the popular vote competition. Attendees can cast ballots for their favorite artwork, and winners receive PEEPS-themed prizes in recognition of their creativity.
“There’s something really special about seeing groups of friends, coworkers, or families come together to make something fun just for the joy of it,” Gardner said. “That sense of collaboration and community is at the heart of the show.”
The Riverfront Arts Center encourages visitors to explore the imaginative displays and vote for their favorites during the exhibition’s run. The event is open to all and aims to showcase local talent and creativity using one of the season’s most iconic sweets.
