CLINTONVILLE – Three thousand travelers were asked in a survey to identify towns they think have the most untapped tourism potential. The survey was conducted by Hostinger, an AI-powered business platform.
The result was a ranking of 85 destinations spread across all 48 contiguous states and Clintonville came in at number 66 and was the only town in Wisconsin.
Here is the description from the survey: “Clintonville’s identity is closely tied to Wisconsin’s aviation, vehicle and manufacturing history, giving the town a story that reaches beyond its modest size. The FWD Seagrave Museum highlights one of its best-known local innovations and explains the development of technology that had an influence far outside the community. Traditional streets, local businesses and surviving industrial buildings add context to that heritage. Beyond town, farmland, forests and quiet roads provide the easygoing scenery associated with northeastern Wisconsin. Clintonville could therefore make a worthwhile road-trip stop for travelers interested in engineering history, small-town industry and the landscapes that supported them.”
The south had the most number of towns making the top 85 and Oregon had three towns on the list. Of the Midwest, the following towns made the list: Henderson, Minn., Mount Ayr, Iowa, Gladstone, Mich., Kewanee, Ill., Watertown, S.D., Oakes, N.D. Peru, Ind. And Martins Ferry, Ohio.
The survey also revealed some insights: towns near water are most popular, the of the underated towns are near main highways but people often do not have a reason to stop or detour, there is a difference between being remote and being overlooked and Google searches and word of mouth are the main drivers of tourism to these kinds of towns.
