Clippers eliminated after three games at state

RIVER FALLS - In the Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Association Class AA State Tournament opening round.

The New London Clippers faced Waupun in a matchup delayed to Aug. 1 by inclement weather that postponed the game from July 31.

Waupun took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, with a popup to shallow center field that led to an overthrow to home plate, resulting in a one-run double.

In the second inning, Waupun brought in a run as a passed ball made the score 2-0, and back-to-back line drive singles made it a 4-0 game.

Chase Beahm brought the lead to 7-0 for Waupun as he hit a three-run home run over the left field wall.

The Clippers got their first run of the game in the third inning, as Cale Adamovich drove in a run with an RBI single, cutting the lead to 7-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, New London’s Brett Marquardt hit a two-run groundball single to cut Waupun’s lead to 7-3. With bases loaded, Troy Degeneffe was walked, making the deficit 7-4.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Waupun scored insurance runs with a one-run single and a sacrifice fly.

New London could not get a runner on in the seventh inning, as Waupun sealed the victory by a final score of 9-4.

Northwoods 2

In the second round on Aug. 2, the New London Clippers faced Northwoods in a win or go home matchup.

Northwoods jumped out to an early lead with an RBI single, and a passed ball that brought in a runner to go up 2-0.

New London’s Logan Ten Haken cut the Northwoods lead in half with a score on a wild pitch that made it 2-1 in the first inning.

Parker Heisie gave the Clippers the lead with a two-run home run in the second inning on a line drive to left field.

The Clippers extended their lead with a RBI sacrifice fly and a single that drove in a run to take a 5-2 lead.

A wild pitch brought in a runner and Ten Haken scored when he stole home to give New London the 7-2 advantage.

Heise singled on a line drive to left field, and Ten Haken hit a ground ball that brought in three runs to make the score 11-2.

Northwoods did not respond as New London advanced to the next round of the playoffs on Aug. 3.

River Falls 10,

New London 1

River Falls took the early 2-0 lead with a line drive single to right field in the bottom of the second inning. Three more RBI singles in the inning gave River Falls the 5-0 advantage.

In the top of the fourth inning, Adamovich scored on an error to give New London a run and cut the River Falls lead to 5-1.

A score on an error, and back-to-back RBI hits made the River Falls lead 8-1.

In the fifth inning, fielder’s choice an unearned run made it 10-1, as the Clippers could not score another run as they were eliminated from the tournament
