The Waupaca High School Student Council is sponsoring Coats for Kids.
Students are asking people in the community to donate new and gently used coats to local children and youth.
Coats may be dropped off at Waupaca Learning Center, Waupaca Middle School and Chain Exploration Center, as well as Piggly Wiggly, Pick ‘n Save, Waupaca Rec Center and the Waupaca Area Public Library.
Donations will be accepted until Wednesday, Nov. 6.
“Our social workers and school counselors identify the students at each school in the district that need a warm coat this winter,” said Amy Niemuth, a Waupaca High School teacher and student council advisor. “They come and actually go through the coats to pick out the sizes that they need.”
Any leftover coats, most of which are adult sizes, are donated to Foundations for Living for distribution in the community.
WHS Student Council has 26 students from freshmen to seniors who volunteer their time to put out the boxes and collect the coats.
“In the past, we have collected over 100 coats and miscellaneous winter items each year,” Niemuth said. “We work with Gunderson Cleaners and Midwest Communications to have the coats organized and cleaned before we distribute them.”
