Klug scores 20 for Waupaca

Waupaca and Marinette came into their North Eastern Conference girls’ basketball game Jan. 18 with a combined 3-24 record. Each team had a 20-point scorer as Marinette’s eight-game losing streak ended with a 61-55 win over the Comets.

Waupaca also fell to Oconto Falls 50-29 Jan. 15.

Marinette 61, Waupaca 55

Marinette’s Katelyn Kitzinger led all scorers with 29 points, while Waupaca’s Kalyn Klug scored 20 for Waupaca.

The lead changed hands five times in the first half before Seattle Lettau broke a 22-22 tie just before halftime with a three-point play that gave the Comets a 25-22 lead at the break.

Another three-point play from Savannah Wehmeyer and Olivia Levine’s basket gave the Comets their biggest lead of the game – 30-24 – early in the second half, but the Marines answered with a 14-4 run. Kitzinger’s steal and layup gave Marinette a 38-34 lead, but Brenna Barlow’s three-pointer gave Waupaca a 41-40 lead. The lead changed hands five more times before Matti Renikow’s basket started an 8-2 run that gave the Marines their biggest lead at 52-45.

The Comets were able to cut the lead to three points four times in the final minutes, but never got any closer.

Lettau also finished in double figures for the Comets, while Mady Sims scored 11 points for Marinette.

Waupaca fell to 1-13 with the loss, while the Marines improved to 3-11.

Oconto Falls 50, Waupaca 29

The Panthers led 30-18 at halftime and outscored the Comets 20-11 in the second half.

Waupaca wrapped up its nonconference schedule Jan. 22 with a home game against Shawano and will resume North Eastern play by hosting Fox Valley Lutheran at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24.
