It’s still early in the season, but the Great Northern Conference has not been very kind to the Waupaca boys’ hockey team so far.
The Comets fell to 0-2 in conference play and 1-5 overall on Dec. 10, losing 4-2 to Northland Pines at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center.
Waupaca outshot the visitors 37-25, but the Eagles won with a pair of unanswered goals in the third period.
The Comets opened the scoring 2:19 into the game, as Cael Prey scored off of an assist from Colin Everts.
Northland Pines tied the game later in the period on a goal from Julian Merschdorf and took a 2-1 lead in the second period on Sam Schrock’s unassisted power play goal.
Prey and Everts combined for Waupaca’s second goal later before the teams entered the third period tied at 2-2.
Nicholas Hahn and Michael Schmidt found the net for the Eagles in the third period.
The Comets will host Rhinelander at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, for another GNC matchup.
