The Waupaca Comets won their first game of the season in week four in an 18-17 upset against the 3-0 Fox Valley Lutheran Foxes on Friday, Sept. 13.
The Comets fell to 0-3 after a loss at the hands of Little Chute in week three and went to 0-1 in the Bay Conference. The Foxes came into the matchup as a top ten team in Division three, winning in week three over their rival Xavier.
The Comets got off to a quick start on the first series of the game, as running back Xzaver Pittman, who finished the game with 125 rushing yards, capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Comets an early 6-0 lead.
The Foxes responded later in the first quarter as quarterback Lucas Papendorf found wide receiver David Schumacher down the sideline for a 61-yard touchdown reception to give the Foxes a 7-6 lead.
In the second quarter, the Foxes went up 14-6 as they scored on an eight-yard touchdown run by Blessings Kapande.
In the closing of the second quarter, the Foxes extended their lead to 11 points as Reagan Doriot kicked a field goal in the final seconds of the first half to make the score 17-6.
In the third quarter, both defenses held up as neither team could put points on the board, and the Foxes took their 17-6 lead into the final quarter.
The Comets scored early in the fourth quarter as quarterback Austin Adamczak connected with Andre Hendrix for a 14-yard touchdown pass to trim the Foxes lead to 17-12.
The defense continued to hold firm for the Comets as they forced the Foxes into a turnover on downs and drove down to the Foxes’ one-yard line as Adamczak, who rushed for 114 yards, scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper to give the 18-17 lead to the Comets with 1:24 left in the fourth quarter.
The Foxes moved the ball down the field through the passing game into Comets territory. Penalties pushed the Foxes back, but they still were within field goal range.
A chance to get into the Comets’ five-yard line was too tempting for the Foxes to turn down, as a pass in the middle of the field was intercepted to seal the Comets’ first victory of the season.
