Snider, Boldt score in 2-1 win
By Greg Seubert
An intense match came down to the very end, as the Waupaca boys’ soccer team held on for a 2-1 win over Medford Oct. 18 in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal win over Medford.
The Comets will now host Rhinelander at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in a regional final at Comet Field. The Hodags advanced to the final Oct. 18 with a 6-2 win over Clintonville. Waupaca is one of two teams with a No. 2 seed in the Rhinelander Sectional, while the Hodags are seeded third.
Waupaca’s Jack Snider opened the scoring in the game’s third minute off of Caleb Studzinski’s corner kick.
Neither team scored again until Medford’s Onyi Ekwueme tied the game five minutes into the second half off of an assist from Junus Telli.
Waupaca had several chances to score, including Dawson Patzke’s breakaway that Medford goalkeeper Brady Hupf stopped.
Bryce Boldt came up with the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute. Forrest Ziebell played the ball in behind the Medford defense for Boldt, who slipped it past Hupf. Boldt nearly had a second goal a few minutes later off of a one-timer from a corner kick but Hupf came up with another save.
“(It was an) excellent defensive effort by our team against a Medford squad that has some quality forward play,” coach Cory Nagel said. “Offensively, we continue to get it done with different people at different times every game.”
