Dodges ICE, not local cops

Almost deported, goes to jail instead

Posted

CLINTONVILLE – On Wednesday morning, Sept. 16, police officers went to a Brix Street address after a caller reported there were five or six people on her lawn claiming to be ICE agents. They had their firearms drawn.

Clintonville officers confirmed they really were ICE agents and they were looking for an illegal alien that had a final order of deportation. Officers found out that the person they were looking for had a Shawano County warrant, so they arrested the person, transported him or her to Embarrass and handed the individual over to a Shawano County deputy. The person is now in the Shawano County Jail.

Clintonville Police Chief Craig A. Freitag issued a memo about the matter: We want to be clear that ICE agents did not contact us; rather, the homeowner requested that we respond. The Clintonville Police Department has traditionally worked well with federal, state, and local law enforcement on investigations in our city and will continue to do so. The Clintonville Police Department has no authority to enforce immigration laws. We also want to clear up any rumors that the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office was not involved or on scene in this case.
