NEW LONDON –Ashley Ellis is the featured artist at Wolf River Art League’s (WRAL) 55th Annual Mid-Winter Art Show, held from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8 and 9 at Crystal Falls Banquet Facility, 1500 Handschke Rd. The event is free and open to the public.
Ellis is an award-winning visual artist and dedicated art instructor with over 15 years of teaching experience and more than two decades of creative exploration. In the summer of 2024, Ellis was the instructor for WRAL’s summer art camp scholarship recipients.
In addition to her artistic career, Ashley is a wife and mother of five, with a sixth child on the way. She and her family cherish and encourage the arts and music as an integral part of their lives. Explore her work and creative journey at ellisvisualarts.com.
“I am incredibly grateful for the annual show put on by the Wolf River Art League and thrilled to be part of such a vibrant arts community in the New London area,” says Ellis. “Each year, this show attracts an impressive array of talent from across the region, and I am continually inspired by the incredible work on display. Being recognized with an award is always an honor, but I believe the true achievement lies in giving oneself permission to create and share their art with the world.”
At 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning the judge’s critique kicks off the event. Lisa Anderson of Appleton and Samuel Watson of Green Bay are judging this year, both having studied art history. Anderson’s studies were split between the Italian Renaissance and Latin American Post-Colonial art and literature. Watsons’ areas of expertise are in modern and contemporary art, as well as Native American art. He has been a full-time professor with the UW system since 2008. Prize ribbons plus cash prizes are awarded to artists of all ages at the show, including a “People’s Choice Award.”
The WRAL will continue its annual fundraising efforts at the show to benefit both school scholarships for continuing education in the arts field, and also for a “Life OnThe River” sculpture trail to be located at Riverside Park.
Attendees can purchase an engraved stainless-steel fish to be part of a community sculpture for the new trail. New London Fabrication laser-cut five species of fish for the project, including sturgeon, catfish, walleye, bass and minnows. Proceeds from the purchase of the fish will go to trail enhancements for future sculptures along the existing trail. An interactive children’s area will feature a fun art project relating to the sculpture trail.
