A familiar opponent is up next for Amherst in the second round of the WIAA football playoffs.
The fourth-seeded Falcons opened the postseason on Oct. 25 with a 35-12 win over No. 5 Oostburg at Heartland Farms Field and will now head to Marshfield to play Stratford on Friday, Nov. 1, to face the top-seeded Tigers in a Division 5 game.
The two teams compete in the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large. The Tigers defeated the Falcons 48-20 earlier in the regular season. That loss started a two-game losing streak, including a loss to Wittenberg-Birnamwood the following week.
The Tigers are 10-0 and are the defending Division 6 state champions.
It didn’t take long for the Falcons to find the end zone against Oostburg, as Sully Perkins returned the opening kickoff 85 yards, the first of four touchdowns in the first quarter.
Michael Glodowski capped the Falcons’ second drive with a 14-yard pass to Cannen Hodges, and Ayden Nerdahl’s 11-yard run midway through the quarter gave Amherst a 21-0 lead.
The Falcons weren’t finished, as Luke Hoffman scored on a 2-yard run.
A botched punt attempt on Oostburg’s first drive of the second half led to the Falcons’ final touchdown. The Falcons took over at the Oostburg 21-yard line, and Perkins scored on a 16-yard run.
The Flying Dutchmen avoided the shutout with Mason Scholten’s 52- and 23-yard touchdown passes in the fourth quarter.
