Weyauwega-Fremont and Hortonville’s football teams picked up road wins Sept. 8, while Waupaca, New London, Iola-Scandinavia, Manawa and Clintonville came up short.
Abbotsford’s one-two running back punch of Christian Fuentes and JV Castillo accounted for five touchdowns and nearly 300 yards of offense as the Falcons picked up a 34-12 nonconference football win over Iola-Scandinavia at Thunderbird Field.
Fuentes scored on runs of 3 and 68 yards in the first quarter and 14 yards in the second quarter to give the Falcons a 20-0 lead.
Jensen Rice scored the Thunderbirds’ first touchdown on a 10-yard quarterback keeper, but Abbotsford answered before halftime with Castillo’s 24-yard run that gave the visitors a 28-6 lead at the break.
Another 10-yard run from Rice cut the Falcons’ lead to 28-12 in the fourth quarter, but Castillo found the end zone from 51 yards out for the game’s final score.
Rice finished with 99 rushing yards on 20 carries and completed 10 of 19 passes for 79 yards.
Fuentes ran for a game-high 169 yards on 14 carries, while Castillo added 118 yards on nine rushes.

There’s still plenty of football to be played before the playoffs get underway, but the Weyauwega-Fremont Warhawks are turning a few heads in the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large.
The Warhawks are 4-0 overall and off to a 2-0 start in CWC-Large play following a 40-20 win over Nekoosa Sept. 9.
The teams headed to halftime tied at 14-14, but the Warhawks outscored the Papermakers 26-6 in the second half.
Nekoosa’s Nash Krcmar opened the scoring with a 17-yard run in the first quarter, but the Warhawks answered in the second quarter on Dawson Lind’s 10-yard run and a 6-yard run from Brayden Arndt.
The Papermakers found the end zone again before halftime on Jacob Bertling’s 9-yard run.
Weyauwega-Fremont took the lead for good in the third quarter on Lind’s 8-yard run. Nekoosa cut the lead to 21-20 on Krcmar’s 17-yard pass to Logan Spice, but never scored again.
The Warhawks added to their lead later in the quarter on Lind’s 7-yard run and Arndt’s 36-yard run.
Kameron Zielke wrapped up the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 13-yard run.
The Warhawks outgained the Papermakers 500-267. Zielke had 113 of the team’s 278 rushing yards and also completed 15 of 22 passes for 222 yards. Hunter Meisenhelder and Arndt caught six passes for 101 and 94 yards, respectively.
Jett Schoenherr returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and it was all downhill for Manawa the rest of the way.
The Tigers added five more scores in the first half on Koehler Kilty’s 1-yard run; a 5-yard run from Jack Tubbs; and Tubbs’ passes of 30 yards to Kilty, 42 yards to Gavin Leonhardt and 10 yards to Colton Breit.
Fox Valley Lutheran quarterback Liam Heiges threw three touchdown passes and added three rushing scores in the Foxes’ win over the Bulldogs.
The Foxes led 35-0 at halftime.
New London scored its touchdown in the third quarter.
Tommy Fields led New London with 103 rushing yards.
Heiges completed eight of passes for 160 yards and added 124 rushing yards on only four carries.
Little Chute led 21-0 after one quarter, 27-0 at halftime and 35-3 after three quarters.
Henry Mouw kicked a field goal for the Comets in the third quarter and Austin Adamczak added a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs held Waupaca to 101 rushing yards and 76 passing yards.
Xzaver Pittman led Waupaca with 52 rushing yards and Mouw caught three passes for 36 yards.
The Bulldogs and Comets fell to 1-3 on the season and will open Bay Conference play Friday, Sept. 15. New London will host Winneconne, while the Comets will head to Shawano.
A big first quarter led to the Hortonville football team’s first Valley Football Association win of the season.
The Polar Bears headed to Appleton Sept. 8 and returned home following a 55-6 win over Appleton West.
Hortonville scored 40 points in the first quarter and held the Terrors to one touchdown.
The Polar Bears improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the VFA.
Whether Crivitz’s football team goes on to win a Northwoods Conference championship remains to be seen, but the Wolverines made a major statement at the Clintonville Truckers’ expense.
Tegan Werner and TJ Mueller ran for a combined 299 of their team’s 408 rushing yards in a 47-25 win Sept. 8 in Clintonville.
The teams combined for eight touchdowns in the first half alone.
Werner capped Crivitz’s opening drive with a 55-yard run, but the Truckers responded on the first play of their next drive with Kade Rosenow’s 56-yard pass to Samuel Wegener.
The Wolverines’ second drive also ended in a score, as Kaden Klaver connected with Jackson Flowers for a 16-yard pass.
The Truckers kept pace with the Wolverines with three touchdowns in the second quarter. Rosenow had touchdown passes of 10 yards to Andre Henning and 8 yards to Wegener, while Jonathan Scherschel returned a kickoff 77 yards.
Crivitz’s third and fourth drives of the opening half also ended in touchdowns, as Klaver had passes of 28 yards to Werner and 25 yards to Brody MacNeil.
The Wolverines led 27-25 at halftime and held the Truckers scoreless in the second half.
Klaver had a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, while Mueller scored on 12-yard runs in the third and fourth quarters.
The Wolverines had a 408-27 advantage in rushing yards, while Rosenow completed 15 of 27 passes as the Truckers outgained Crivitz 200-93 through the air. Wegener caught six passes for 117 yards.
Werner led Crivitz with 150 rushing yards, while Mueller added 149 and Klaver finished with 94.
Clintonville fell to 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in Northwoods play, while Crivitz improved to 2-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall.
