Firefighter Stevens honored in memorial

FREMONT –Assistant Chief Robert A. Stevens of the Fremont-Wolf River Fire Department will be honored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) during their 44th National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend on May 3-4. Stevens died at age 66 on January 27, 2022 from complications of Covid-19.
He is one of 70 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2024 and 70 firefighters who died in previous years. Another Wisconsin firefighter will be honored, Gary Edwin Berg, of the North Prairie Fire Department. He died at age 54 on October 19, 2021, also from complications of Covid-19.

About Bob Stevens
He was born in New London and graduated with honors from Weyauwega-Fremont High School. He was also an Eagle Scout. He worked with his father in construction and later took over the business, renaming it RA Stevens Builders. This would remain his lifelong career.
He was a founding member of the Webfooter Waterski Club and his nickname was “Hot Sticks Stevens.” He also was longtime member of the Invaders Snowmobile Club.

Stevens served as an EMT with Fremont-Wolf River EMS from June 1991 through June 2016 and was an active member of the Fremont-Wolf River Fire Department for 35 years, where he was the former assistant chief. Stevens also worked with Poygan Ice Salvage, helping to retrieve vehicles that went through the ice during the winter.
He is survived by his wife, Faith, and numerous children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Streaming memorial services
There are two events at National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park on the grounds of the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, MD. The National Fallen Firefighters Candlelight Service is on May 3 at 7:30 p.m. E.T. The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service is on May 4 at 10:00 a.m. E.T.
The NFFF will live stream both events on the NFFF’s website (firehero.org), YouTube channel and Facebook page.

“This weekend is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary courage and commitment of those who put their lives on the line to protect others,” said Troy Markel, Chair of the NFFF Board of Directors. “We come together not only to remember the fallen, but to stand in solidarity with their families and departments, letting them know their loved ones will never be forgotten.”
