Both teams picked up a win Sunday, June 26. Waupaca handed Weymont a 10-3 loss, while Scandinavia defeated Plover 7-1. The Lakemen and Vikings head into the contest tied with Rosholt at 5-2.
Waupaca 10, Weymont 3
WAUPACA - Jeff Riddle started on the mound for Waupaca and pitched five complete innings to pick up the win.
He got out of a bases-loaded situation in the first, as Kyle Bosquez led off the game with a single. Jordan Baitinger singled after a force out. A fly ball accounted for the second out and a walk loaded the bases before a groundout ended the frame.
Waupaca struck quickly off of White Bass hurler Craig Bednarek. He helped Waupaca's cause by hitting Riddle. Jason Wanty lined to left, but the ball was dropped for an error. Bednarek then hit Luke Behm to load the bases and Rocky Mondello lined a two-run single to left field. David Yeska walked to reload the bases, but Cam Nicewander grounded sharply into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Riddle got the bottom of the order in 1-2-3 fashion in the second, but the Lakemen added to their lead, as Nate Nelson had a one-out single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Wanty's long fly ball to center field.
Weymont got consecutive one-out singles from Dion Behm, Baitinger and Zach Alix in the top of the third to cut the lead to 3-1. A hit batter loaded the bases, but a force out at home on a ground ball to third and a bouncer back to the mound got Riddle out of that jam.
Waupaca had a big third inning to open the game up. Mondello led off with a single and Braden Kaminske deposited a home run off the light pole in left field to make it 5-1. Yeska reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and eventually scored on Riddle's bloop single to right that fell just out of the reach of the second baseman. A throwing error by the shortstop led to another run and the Lakemen took a 7-1 lead into the fourth inning.
Weymont scored twice in the fourth after two outs. An error opened the door and follow-up singles by Behm, Baitinger and Alix did the job.
Mondello led off the Lakemen half of the fourth with a walk and Nicewander added a two-out single. Bednarek then threw wildly to first trying to pick Nicewander off and Mondello scored from second as the throw went to the old clubhouse building.
Riddle, Wanty and Behm lined consecutive singles in the fifth to make it 9-3 and Alix replaced Bednarek. Mondello immediately touched him for an RBI single, but that would be it for the Lakemen for the day.
Nelson doubled in the sixth and Zac Peterson drew a walk in the eighth. Riddle got through the fifth and Peterson worked the final four innings, allowing a hit and two walks while picking up the save.
Waupaca outhit the White Bass 11-9. Mondello had three to lead Waupaca, while Riddle and Nelson added two each. Baitinger led Weymont with three hits and Bosquez, Behm and Alix chipped in with two each.
Freedom 6, Waupaca 2
WAUPACA - After a week of virtual inactivity, the Mets and Lakemen were happy to get a game in Friday, June 24, after last week's rains. It seemed that the layoff affected the Lakemen more, as they played a rather shoddy game with three errors.
Freedom hit four miscues, but the Mets seemed to play with more enthusiasm and aggressiveness.
Kaminske started on the mound for the Lakemen and went four innings, giving up four earned runs, seven hits and three walks.
The Mets scored three times in the second inning on two walks and three hits and added a run in the third on three singles.
Meanwhile, the Lakemen had four hits over the first four innings, but didn't score.
Riddle led off the game for the Lakemen with a single and Will Marringa doubled off the left field fence with two outs in the second. Kaminske and Marringa sandwiched singles around two outs in the fourth, but no Lakemen runner got past second base.
Marringa pitched the fifth and sixth frames. He got through the fifth with only a walk, but the sixth started with a Lakemen error. Three hits later and the Mets added two runs to their total. Nicewander pitched a scoreless seventh despite a leadoff error.
Waupaca finally broke into the scoring column with one out in the sixth. Kaminske started the rally with a single Casey McDaniel followed with an infield hit. Marringa then drove Kaminske in with his third hit of the game. Unfortunately, the next two batters made outs and the inning ended with the Lakemen trailing 6-1.
Waupaca scored a unearned consolation run in the seventh, as Riddle reached on an error and eventually scored on two Freedom errors.
The Lakemen fell to 7-5 on the season with the loss.
