After spending the first month of the season on the road, the Waupaca wrestling team finally had the opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd.

The Comets hosted Oconto Falls for a North Eastern Conference dual meet on Jan. 9, but they lost 61-15 to the Panthers.

Waupaca won three of the meet’s 10 contested matches but forfeited four matches that accounted for almost half of the Panthers’ points.
The Panthers opened the meet with a pin, as Nick Trepanier pinned Dakota Thoma in the 190-pound match in 5:20.

Waupaca cut the lead in half to 6-3 in the next match, as Cooper Pate handed Caleb Dryja a 13-6 loss at 215.

Jagger Reed’s 9-1 win over T.J. Grant at 285 gave the Panthers a 10-3 lead, but the Comets cut the lead to 10-9 after Pierce Karl pinned Fisher Bigelow in 1:08 at 106.

The Panthers’ one-point lead quickly grew to 28-9 after Waupaca forfeited matches to Isaish Holtz, Levi Mommaerts and Brandon Romo at 113, 120 and 126, respectively.

Five more wins in the next five matches gave the Panthers a 55-9 lead. Jack Ladowski pinned Savana Hansen at 132, Ethan Zielinski picked up a 7-5 win over Ryan Frank at 138, Hunter Bozile pinned Joey Mason in 1:04 at 144, Cole Bozile pinned Matt Schmidt in 2:34 at 150 and Andrew Derouin pinned Noah Crane in 3:43 at 157.

Waupaca forfeited the 165-pound match to Jacob Trepanier and Owen Hansen wrapped up the match for Waupaca by pinning Emmett Johns in 1:17 at 175.
The Comets also have a home meet on Thursday, Jan. 16, as Waupaca will host Freedom and Clintonville. Matches are scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m.
