Project was discussed for decades

NEW LONDON – A groundbreaking ceremony for the New London Public Library project, which will convert the former First State Bank building to the new home of the library, was held June 10.
“We’ve waited a long time for this day, and it’s finally here,” said Steve Hart, president of the New London Library Museum Board, leading off the groundbreaking ceremony.
Hart thankedFirst State Bank for the donation of the building. He also thanked everyone who donated funds to the library project.
“Speaking of donations, this project bid was higher than we expected, and we are still accepting donations to help furnish and equip the building,” Hart said.
Kathy Gwidt, who wrote the grant for the project, was given a special thank you by Hart.

“Without her expertise in grant writing, we would not be here at this time,” Hart said. “Three point nine million thank yous, Kathy.”
Hart said once the project is completed there will be “something for infants to seniors” in the library.
“With the completion of this building, it will truly be the heart of the community,” he added.
New London Mayor Mark Herter told attendees that the library project “represents so much more than bricks and mortar.”
“It is a testament to our shared belief in the power of knowledge, connection, and imagination,” Herter said. “A library is not just a place to check out books—it’s a space for discovery, lifelong learning, and community growth. It will serve as a hub for children to explore new worlds, for adults to gain new skills, and for neighbors to come together in the spirit of curiosity and collaboration.”
He added, “None of this would be possible without the generosity of so many who believe in the future of New London.”
Regarding the donors, Herter said, “Your support is a reflection of what makes this community so special—when we come together, there’s nothing we can’t achieve.

“Today’s groundbreaking marks the beginning of a new chapter—not only for our library, but for our city. Let’s build a space that inspires, uplifts, and brings us all together.”
Matt Lemke, of First State Bank, told attendees, “For First State Bank, donating the building felt like a meaningful way to give back to a community that has really given so much to so many. Our hope is that this place becomes a place where future generations can continue to have knowledge, curiosity, and grow as a group.”
The speaking portion of the ceremony concluded with remarks from Milt Staskal, who was part of the building committee. Staskal said that discussions about creating a new library in New London began before the Highway 45 bypass was completed.

“Lots of hard work, time, effort, ups and downs, starts, misfires, multiple plans, and yes, even multiple places, dreams and a nightmare or two, and here we are, groundbreaking,” Staskal said.
Staskal said the word he heard the most prior to the start of the ceremony was “finally,” and he concluded his remarks with, “All of the people in the greater community of New London can say, ‘Thank God, finally.’”
