A handmade quilt featuring pine trees is the top prize for the raffle to be held Oct. 1 at the Taste of Norway/Lost Arts Fest sponsored by the Iola Historical Society.
Funds from the raffle will go toward the restoration of the historic Iola & Northern Railroad Depot. The depot restoration has already started with interior demolition of wall and ceiling coverings taking out old insulation.
Created by Joanna Rheingans of the Norske Needlers Quilt Club, the quilt measures 72x65 inches and is valued at $600. Called "The Pines," it features panels with pine trees, pine needles and pine cones. Rheingans spent many hours making the quilt and her donation of it to the fundraising effort for the depot is much appreciated by the Iola Historical Society.
The quilt can be seen and tickets can be purchased at the First National Bank in Iola at 148 N. Main Street through Sept. 16, then the quilt will be on display and tickets can be purchased at Premier Community Bank at 505 E. State Street in Iola through Oct. 31. Tickets are $2, or three for $5.
Tickets can also be purchased at The Millstone at Iola Mills restaurant and from Iola Historical Society members, as well as on the day of the Taste of Norway/Lost Arts Fest, Oct. 1, at the Historical Society's complex on Depot Street. The drawing will be held in the early afternoon, and winners need not be present to win.
Additional prizes have been donated by area businesses.
The second annual Taste of Norway/Lost Arts Fest also includes the Iola-Scandinavia Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Gift & Craft Show, a kids Fun Run sponsored by the Iola-Scandinavia Community Fitness & Aquatic Center and the Iola Lions Health Fair, which includes flu shots, blood pressure testing and cholesterol testing, among other things. The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
