NL Utilities program helps local food pantry
By John Faucher
New London Utilities is sponsoring a new energy efficient LED holiday light exchange program until Dec. 15 for all of its customers.
Utility Manager Steve Thompson explained the program to New London City Council members at a recent meeting.
“The new LEDs can last up to 40 holiday seasons, and use 90 percent less energy than traditional lights,” said Thompson. The new lights are also safer.
The program will benefit the New London Community Cupboard.
New London Utility customers can bring in a strand of incandescent holiday lights and three non-perishable food pantry items and get one strand of LED holiday lights. Thompson said customers could bring in up to two strands of lights and six pantry items to receive up to two sets of the new lights per household.
Food items for the food pantry must be non-expired items.
“The old lights collected will be recycled by a local group as a fundraising effort,” Thompson said.
Current customers with a good standing account can exchange their lights at the New London Utilities office located at 400 E. North Water Street.
Sets of the lights are on display, on top of decorated Christmas trees at city hall and the utility office.
Suggested items for the food pantry include Hamburger Helper, Tuna Helper, beans, macaroni and cheese, canned fruit, tuna, cold cereal and oatmeal.
