A pitcher’s duel in the early innings between two First-Team All-Fox Valley Association hurlers on the mound went into extra innings as Hortonville baseball battled Kaukauna at home on Thursday, April 10.
Hortonville Senior Taiven Gass took on Kaukauna junior Bron Schaeffer as both sat down batters in the early innings.
Schaeffer delivered the first run for Kaukauna in the third inning as he drove in a runner to make it a 1-0 score.
Rashaud Kastner was walked, and Jack Tennie doubled to put two runners on base in the fourth inning, but both runners were stranded as the Polar Bears couldn’t cash in.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Gary Wuest drove in Tennie to deliver a game-tying run to make it 1-1.
A hit by Griffin Jens to the outfield for Hortonville sent in a runner from second to home plate. Kaukauna tagged the runner at the plate to send the game to extra innings.
In the ninth inning, Kaukauna had the bases loaded in their favor as Carter Skalmoski scored the winning run after a walk to give Kaukauna the 2-1 lead, and Hortonville could not respond in the bottom of the ninth.
