The Hortonville High School choir will host its first madrigal dinner in more than eight years at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.
The Elizabethan Madrigal Dinner combines a concert, theater and food.
The production will transport guests back to the English Renaissance with more than 45 minutes of musical entertainment while the audience gets to see the inner workings of a noble court.
Choir Director Justin Foth explained what this particular madrigal program is about.
“So in this particular play, there is the story of the Queen Mother and then the young princess is kind of going back and forth trying to one up each other throughout the whole play with different extravagant gifts. And then in within that also, there’s a big story line about fruitcake that keeps coming back. That’s the punch line of the whole show, was actually the show itself, called a Christmas fruitcake,” Foth said.
He described the plot as just a bunch of little comedy sketches where the characters learn to accept each other as they are and celebrate each other’s company.
The show features Anya Smith as the queen mother, Patton Siegman as the king, Ella Cannon as the prince and Hannah Hartfield as the princess.
About 30 students will sing, accompanied by four brass players and another dozen servers.
Although the choir is responsible for putting the show on, they are not the only involved in the production, said Foth.
“All of the main characters are choir students,” according to Foth. “It is part of our class to put the production on but some of the servers will be kids from musical or from other choirs. And then we’ll have four band people who will be playing our brass for us.”
The menu for the evening features ham with a Creole maple glaze and roast chicken with gravy along with side dishes.
Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at bit.ly/3hGY2WV.
Hortonville High School’s website also provides a link for tickets.
Tickets must be purchased no later than Nov. 24 to ensure that there will be enough food for all of the guests.
