Polar Bears baseball alum Thomas Burns is the latest in a line of strong pitching tradition for Hortonville to get his chance at playing in the Major Leagues.
Right-handed pitcher Burns was selected in the eighth round with the 227th pick by the Minnesota Twins on July 12th.
Burns lettered three seasons at Hortonville and was selected to two All-State teams during his high school career, as well as helping lead the Polar Bears to the state championship game during his senior season in 2023.
Beginning his collegiate career at Arizona State, Burns transferred to the University of Texas before his sophomore season.
In 42 appearances with Texas, Burns struck out 83 batters, posted a 4.59 ERA as a Longhorns reliever, and held opponents to a .183 batting average while posting eight career saves. During his final season with the Longhorns, they advanced to the second round of the College World Series in 2026.
The Polar Bears have had a handful of pitchers selected in the MLB draft as Burns continues the lineage, including Dave Gassner selected in the 24th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2001, Caleb Boushley selected in the 33rd round by the San Diego Padres in 2017, and Jake Sommers selected in the 10th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2019.
