I-S schools work to stay on top

Staying at the top is the next step for the Iola-Scandinavia School District.

After ranking highest in the area on the state’s School Report Card, the I-S School District is taking steps to improve its scores.

Although the administrators believe they know what needs to be done, they plan to discuss the issue with representatives from CESA 5.

"It is nice to be at the top looking in," said board president Charles Wasrud.

"It is impressive that we’re No. 1," said board member Bruce Beyersdorf. "We’re definitely doing something right."

District Administrator David Dyb reported that a strategic planning process is set to begin in the school district.

"It will be a good process," he said. "It will provide a foundation."

Dyb also announced that the I-S School District will be activating the Sylert school messenger system.

He said the new system can do mass messaging to a K-12 group. It also can be individualized, if necessary.

"It is just another communication mode," Dyb said. "We don’t want to overuse it."

In other business, the board:

• Approved a contract for Becky Robillard as prom coordinator and junior class fundraising adviser.

• Accepted the resignation of Beth Novak as library assistant, effective Oct. 18.

• Approved changing the library assistant position from full time to be two part-time positions, each at four hours per day.

• Set a special board meeting for 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, to approve the tax levy.
