Indians beat Manawa Wolves

Posted
Weyauwega-Fremont's baseball team traveled 13 miles down the road to face archrival Manawa and returned home Monday, May 16, with a 14-7 win over the Wolves.

The Indians also fell to Stevens Point Pacelli 11-1 Tuesday, May 10.

MANAWA - Stellar defense in the infield and great assists from all three outfielders helped the Indians pick up their 14th win, according to coach Jeff Fahser.

"Tommy Meehan, Trevor Potratz and Mitch Beilfuss all threw out runners trying to advance or score," he said. "The biggest play came in the fifth when Tommy made a diving catch in center and then threw to Treg DeSantis, who doubled off the runner to spark our rally. We were trailing 7-5 at the time."

The Indians didn't get going offensively until the third inning. Collin Tidwell led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Beilfuss. Potratz brought home Beilfuss with a single to left to tie the score at 1-1. The Indians got things going again with leadoff hitter Eric Keenan, who drew his first of two walks on the day and advanced to second on a strikeout by Cole Bosquez, who reached after the catcher dropped the ball. Meehan took advantage of the situation with a double off of the left field fence to make the score 3-1.

The Wolves responded with three runs of their own, but the Indians evened up the score in the fourth on a base hit by Tidwell and a groundout from Beilfuss.

Manawa would come back again in the fourth with three more runs.

The Indians added another run in the fifth on back-to-back-to-back singles by Bosquez, Meehan and Cody Derozier that cut the lead to 7-5. Meehan's diving catch and throw in the fifth sparked the Indians at the plate in the top of the 6th, as W-F exploded for seven runs.

Beilfuss led off the inning with a double off of the center field wall. He advanced to third as Potratz reached on an error. Keenan loaded the bases with an infield hit and Bosquez made the score 7-6 by drawing a bases-loaded walk.

Meehan and Derozier each hit sacrifice flies to give the Indians an 8-7 lead. The Indians would score four more runs in the inning, highlighted by Tidwell's three-run opposite-field home run.

Meehan shut the door in the sixth and seventh innings, allowing one walk and no hits in a relief appearance.

The Indians scored two more in the seventh on a Derozier single and improved to 14-3 on the season. Wes Alix picked up the win with five strong innings.

Pacelli 11, W-F 1

STEVENS POINT - A day after getting rained out against Amherst, the Indians traveled to Stevens Point to play the Cardinals in a battle of conference unbeatens.

The Indians were never in the game, as Pacelli scored in all but one inning. The Cardinals pounded out 14 hits, including two home runs in the win. Beilfuss pitched 4 2/3 innings and took the loss.

The Indians were able to manage only one hit, a two-out double by Potratz in the third. The Indians scored their only run in the fourth, as Bosquez led off with a walk, took second on a passed ball, moved to third on a Meehan groundout and scored two pitches later on a groundout by Derozier.

"We didn't pitch or hit well," Fahser said.

Kelvin Stroik struck out seven Indians to get the win.

The Indians will get a second shot at the Cardinals at 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday, May 19) in Weyauwega.
