Freedom is expected to be a contender to win a North Eastern Conference girls’ basketball championship this season.
If the team’s performance against Waupaca is any indication, the Irish are headed in the right direction.
Freedom outscored the Comets 35-12 in the second half on Dec. 6 and cruised to a 68-34 win while improving to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
Waupaca stayed within striking distance in the first half. The Comets trailed by as many as 19 points but closed the half with an 8-0 run and trailed 33-22 at the break.
The Comets never got any closer in the second half and the Irish added to their lead with 11-1 and 10-0 runs.
Rossi Wehmeyer and Hailey Bechard finished with double figures for the Comets with 12 and 10 points, respectively. At the same time, Taylor Kling chipped in with nine.
Freedom’s Breana Dickrell scored all her game-high points on five three-pointers in the first half and Ava Calhoon and Abigail Cropsey added 11 each.
Waupaca fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in league play after opening the season with four straight home games.
