One of the most successful seasons in recent memory for the Waupaca volleyball team ended Oct. 23 with a five-set loss in a regional final.
The fourth-seeded Comets had a 14-11 lead and served for the win in the decisive fifth game against top-seeded Mosinee in a WIAA Division 2 regional final on the Indians’ home court, but ended up on the short end of a 17-15 score.
The Comets had advanced to the final after wins over Tomahawk and Clintonville.
Waupaca won two of the first three games after the Indians opened the match with a 25-20 win.
The Comets won the next two sets 27-25 and 25-23 before Mosinee forced a fifth game with a 25-18 win.

The Comets took three of four games from the Hatchets Oct. 21.
The teams split the first two games, with Waupaca winning the first 25-20 and Tomahawk taking the second 25-22.
Waupaca then won the next two games, 25-20 and 25-16.
Clintonville opened the match Oct. 19 with a 25-16 win in the first game, but Waupaca eliminated the Truckers by winning the next three sets, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-14.
