IOLA – The Iola Historical Society will dedicate its Native American Heritage Historical Marker
June 8.
Native American populations have occupied central Wisconsin going back 14,000 years.
To honor this fact, the Iola Historical Society will be dedicating its latest historical marker.
The location will be in the open area just past the first bridge of the Lions River Walk just off North Main Street and it will be west of the mill pond dam.

Regional archaeologist, Dr. Ray Reser, will be on hand to help illuminate facts about the various Native American legends of the area and also answer any questions the public may have.
There is no cost for the event, which starts at 2 p.m.
Other historical markers include Buttolph Bridge, “I’m Chet” at Chet Krause Legacy Park and the Iola Car Show 50th anniversary marker.
The Iola Historical Society Museum at 205 Depot Street, also features a number of Native American artifacts that date back over 10,000 years.
The collection was donated to the museum by the Towne family, with members of the Towne family collecting the artifacts from Waupaca, Waushara and Portage counties.
