Posted

STEVENS POINT — John Shulfer, the suspect in the shooting of his parents Dale and Paula, was again deemed not competent for court hearings.
Shulfer was ruled competent to proceed with court hearings on Sept. 10, but that ruling was reversed on Sept. 23 when Shulfer was deemed incompetent.
On Dec. 2, Shulfer appeared by video in custody from Waupaca County Jail for a status conference. According to court records, at this time, Shulfer was deemed not yet competent but likely to become competent in the time required. The court stated Shulfer is to continue with his current treatment.
Shulfer is facing charges in relation to the July 6 shooting of his parents, Dale and Paula Shulfer. Shulfer was found near the residence where Dale and Paula were found deceased, in possession of a pistol, and was then shot by a deputy. While in the hospital and recovering from three gunshot wounds, Shulfer confessed to investigators shooting Dale and Paula Shulder in addition to being in possession of a pistol when shot by the deputy.
He remains in custody on a $2,000,000 cash bond. Shulfer’s next status conference is scheduled for March 2, 2026.
