In the small alley next to Shindig, the downtown candy store, Dory Tischendorf sits in a scissor lift and adds to the giant mural that covers the entire side of the building.
She started it on the last day of June and she hopes to be done in a couple weeks.
“Its way more than I bargained for but I’m very grateful. It’s quite an honor,” she said.
Shindig owner Carolyn Niemuth asked her to paint it the candy-themed mural.
“It’s my creation but it’s her idea,” said Tischendorf.
Tischendorf, a retired nurse, never studied art but says she was gifted with it. She has created a mural 20 years ago in a basement and it has an outdoor theme with bald eagles soaring over with birch and pine trees. When she was a teenager she painted a mural on her father’s garage door.
She’s using Benjamin Moore exterior paint from The Paint Store which is on the same block.
“They’ve been very good to me,” she said. “It will be done when it’s done but I want to get it done before the snow flies.”
