The local counties were well represented during the WIAA Girls state individual championships from Oct. 17-19. The sixth-seeded doubles team of Natalie Cooper and Lauren Loesl had the best showing during the three-day tournament.
New Londons Kate Johnston and Pacellis Morgan Matowitz each participated in the first round of the Division 2 singles tournament.
Cooper and Loesl won the opening round over Brookfield Academy’s Claire Tian and Marilee Nygro by 6-1/6-1,
In round three, Cooper and Loesl upset the third-seeded Hope Saller and Grace Saller of St Thomas More with a 6-2/6-1 decision to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinal, Cooper and Loesl defeated the seventh-seeded Ava Miller and Parker Van Dusen of Kenosha St Joseph by 6-0/7-5 to move to the WIAA State Championship doubles match.
Cooper and Loesl could not complete the championship bid as top-seeded Vivie Auth and Adel Schneider of St. Mary Catholic won the WIAA Girls tennis doubles championship 6-0/6-3.
