Robbins helps lead Thunderbirds over Wolves

Posted

Solid seasons from Bonduel and Wittenberg-Birnamwood keep the Iola-Scandinavia boys’ basketball team from competing for a Central Wisconsin Conference-East championship this season.

All three of the team’s losses in league play have come to the Bears and Chargers, but the Thunderbirds kept pace in the conference standings Feb. 4 with a 65-46 road win over Manawa.

The Thunderbirds built an eight-point lead over the Wolves late in the first half before taking a 33-27 lead at the break.

Iola-Scandinavia quickly pushed the lead to 11 points after opening the second half with a 7-2 run. The Wolves cut the deficit to 47-39 with six straight points, but the Thunderbirds responded with a 12-2 run and closed the game by outscoring the home team 18-7.

Alex Robbins scored 16 of 23 game-high points in the first half to lead the Thunderbirds, while Ryan Thulien and Landan Fuhs chipped in with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Brayden Zielke led Manawa with 19 points.

The Thunderbirds improved to 7-3 in conference play and 12-5 overall, while the Wolves fell to 1-9 in the CWC-East and 6-11 overall.
