Ethan Olds-Stevens Point

Three consecutive championships is a rare feat in any sport, and the Stevens Point Panthers accomplished that task on Nov.2 as they took home the 2024 WIAA State Boys Cross Country Championship to add to their trophy case. A factor in all three of those title victories is Ethan Olds.

Ethan helped his team to a state title, posting a time of 15:25.8, which was a team-best and helped propel his team to the top spot on the podium.

Beginning his love of sports through basketball, Ethan began his journey in cross country in the fifth grade and has gained a passion for running: “My teammates are my favorite part. Cross country is one of the most wholesome sports you can be a part of. The environment is just different than other “mainstream” sports. The environment and people helped me love the sport and stick with it throughout high school.”

Along with his state championships, Ethan has a list of several accomplishments; highlights in his career include running a 15:15, which placed him 16th at NXR Heartland 2023, and qualifying for Nike Cross Nationals.

Ethan, who plans to attend a four-year university to study data science, has managed his time between his studies and running wisely: “Balancing academics and athletics were never really a problem for me. Using my time wisely in school was always a factor because it gave me time to run.“

Keeping his composure has been the key to Ethan’s success, “I would say my biggest asset is my calm demeanor. It helps me be a leader for the team and helps relax the younger, more inexperienced guys during stressful races.”

Ethan senses his progression from the time he began his freshman season to his senior year,” It is interesting to see how I’ve grown as a person. As a freshman, I was shy and only talked when I needed to. As a senior, I’ve noticed myself stepping up and being a leader. As an athlete, it is always cool to see the progression of people as they mature as runners.”
