Thunderbirds wrap up busy week

The Iola-Scandinavia softball team recently wrapped up a very busy week that included six games in six days.

The Thunderbirds posted a 5-1 for the week, including an 8-5 loss to Amherst May 8 in Wisconsin Rapids; a 16-2 win over Shiocton May 9; a 15-4 win over Menominee Indian May 10; a 6-2 home win over Weyauwega-Fremont May 11; and a 12-0 win over Marathon and a 5-2 win over Waupaca May 13 in Marathon.

The team finished with a 10-4 record in the Central Wisconsin Conference-East and is now 15-8.

Amherst 8, Iola-Scandinavia 5

Iola-Scandinavia had a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but Amherst responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and four more in the fifth. The T-Birds outhit the Falcons 11-10, but couldn’t get any hits with runners in scoring position.

Marin Hoyord, Clara Koles, Jaelyn Sivertson and Chloe Timdal had two hits. Koles had a pair of RBI singles in the third and sixth innings, while Sivertson drove in a run on a triple in the sixth.

Maddie Much started the game and pitched the first 4 1/3 innings. Julia Munoz pitched the final 1 2/3 innings. Much allowed eight hits and five walks while striking out one batter. Munoz allowed two hits and two walks while striking out one batter.

Iola-Scandinavia 16, Shiocton 2

Iola-Scandinavia scored four runs in the first inning and six more in the seventh in a CWC-East win over the Chiefs. The T-Birds also scored two and three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

Brooklyn Berrens had five of the T-Birds’ 21 hits and drove in four runs, including a run-scoring double in the second inning and also had a two-run single off of the fence in the fourth. Sivertson had four hits, including a two-run double off of the fence in the seventh. Myah Heschke, Koles and Much each had two hits. Koles had a run-scoring single in the first inning and a two-run double in the fifth. Heschke had a run-scoring double off of the fence in the seventh and Munoz also had a two-run single in the seventh.

Much allowed seven hits and no walks to get the win on the mound.

Iola-Scandinavia 15, Menominee Indian 4

Iola-Scandinavia scored three runs in the third inning and four runs in the fourth to break open a 1-1 game and went on to beat the Eagles in a five-inning game.

Koles, Much and Sivertson each had three hits. Sivertson had a two-run home run in the fourth and a leadoff triple in the fifth; Much had a double ;Koles had a run-scoring double in the fourth and a run-scoring single in the fifth; and Hoyord had a two-run double.

Munoz pitched all five innings to earn the win.

Iola-Scandinavia 6, Weyauwega-Fremont 2

The T-Birds wrapped up their CWC-East schedule with a win over the Warhawks.

Munoz had two hits; Much had a run-scoring double followed by Berrens’ RBI single in the third; and Ava Printz had a two-run single in the sixth.

Hailey Wohlt had two of Weyauwega-Fremont’s four hits. Marianna Hansen and Olivia Witkowski accounted for the other two hits.

Much allowed four hits to get the complete-game win, while Witkowski took the loss.

Iola-Scandinavia 12, Marathon 0

Iola-Scandinavia scored three runs in the first inning and nine more in the third in a five-inning game.

Berrens, Hoyord and Sivertson each had three hits. Hoyord drove in four runs in the game and had a three-run home run in the first inning.

Heschke, Koles and Much each had two hits and Much had a three-run home run in the third inning.
Much pitched all five innings to earn the win.

Iola-Scandinavia 5, Waupaca 2

With the score tied 2-2 after three innings, Iola-Scandinavia scored a run in the fourth and added two more in the fifth.

Much and Sivertson each had three hits, while Berrens had a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Hailey Bechard, Lily Cichy and Kayla Keil had hits for Waupaca.

Much worked the first two innings, while Munoz pitched the final five. Josie Peterson started for Waupaca and pitched the first four innings before Bechard pitched the final two.

The T-Birds will begin WIAA tournament play by hosting Oconto at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, in a Division 4 regional semifinal.
