Slow start hurts Warhawks in loss to Thunderbirds

Posted
It wasn't a good start for the Weyauwega-Fremont boys' basketball team in its first of two matchups with Iola-Scandinavia.

A technical foul during the pregame warmup led to a pair of free throws for the Thunderbirds before the opening tipoff.

The Warhawks also trailed 19-1 at one point, never led and ended up dropping a 59-45 decision Dec. 12 to a team expected to contend for a Central Wisconsin Conference-East championship.

A pair of baskets from Korz Loken gave the Thunderbirds a 19-1 lead midway through the first half, but the Warhawks used a 16-4 run to cut the home team's lead to 23-17.

Weyauwega-Fremont never got any closer the rest of the way and the Thunderbirds headed to the locker room with a 36-18 halftime lead after ending the half with a 13-1 run.

The Warhawks never got any closer than 12 points in the second half and Iola-Scandinavia led by as many as 21 points late in the game.

Alex Robbins and RJ Opperman led Iola-Scandinavia with 19 and 18 points, respectively, while the Warhawks' Ethan Koplien led all scorers with 20.
The teams are scheduled to face each other again Thursday, Jan. 30, in Weyauwega.
