Waupaca threw the first punch, but Luxemburg-Casco delivered the knockout blows.
The Comets scored on the opening drive of their season-opening nonconference football game, but the Spartans responded with 34 unanswered points Aug. 19 and went on to post a 47-21 win at Comet Field.
Parker Krcmar gave Waupaca an early 7-0 lead on a 10-yard quarterback keeper before Max Ronsman had a hand in the Spartans’ four trips to the end zone in the first half.
The Luxemburg-Casco quarterback scored from 17 yards out and threw a 50-yard pass to Ryan Routhieaux in the first quarter and added runs of 3 and 82 yards in the second quarter to give his team a 27-7 lead at the break.

Christopher VanderWielen’s 5-yard run gave the Spartans a 34-7 lead in the third quarter, but the Comets answered with a pair of touchdowns to cut the deficit to 34-21. Krcmar hooked up with Aaron Wolff and Andre Hendrix for touchdown passes.
However, a pair of interceptions down the stretch helped seal the win for the Spartans.
VanderWielen came up with a pick on a tipped pass and capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. Sawyer Dorn added another interception that led to Jacob DeGrave’s 18-yard run.
Waupaca will head to Appleton Friday, Aug. 26, to take on another North Eastern Conference team, Fox Valley Lutheran. The Comets will also host Freedom Friday, Sept. 2, and travel to Wrightstown Friday, Sept. 9, before opening their Bay Conference schedule Friday, Sept. 16, at home against Shawano. Kickoff for all four games is set for 7 p.m.
