The University of Wisconsin Varsity Band will perform at New London High School at 7 p.m. Monday, March 4.
Under the direction of Professor Michael Leckrone for the past 43 years, the Wisconsin Band has become one of the top collegiate marching bands in the nation, featuring about 300 students and staff members.
The band's traditions of concerts at the Kohl Center and the 5th quarter are well-known. The UW Marching Band has recently performed in their second consecutive Big 10 championship as well as third consecutive appearance in the Rose Bowl parade and Rose Bowl game.
The band receives acclaim for its innovative shows, precise marching and playing style, and intense energy. As a result of their outstanding performances, the UW band has been named a "Wisconsin Treasure" by Discover Wisconsin and the governor of Wisconsin.
They have also been named "Outstanding Philanthropists of the Year" in recognition of their charitable activities.
About 103 members of the band will play in New London on March 4. Several of them are graduates of area high schools in New London, Hortonville, Iola, Seymour, Appleton, Neenah, Menasha, and Oshkosh.
Band students perform at several concerts, as well as performing on trips, at athletic events, and other social functions throughout the state all year long.
The New LASS Scholarship Committee has worked hard to make this event possible, and all proceeds from this performance will be used for scholarships for New London High School seniors.
"The Committee has worked with Carrie Karow to help make this event a reality," said NLHS Guidance Counselor Bill Storck. "We hope that this event will be a big fundraiser for New LASS, since it has the potential to double or triple our biggest fundraiser with this event.
"We're very excited to raise as much money as we can to help the Class of 2013 by providing scholarships," added Storck. "We may be able to raise enough money from this one event to support multiple scholarships. Anyone interested in donating money or volunteering their time to help with New LASS can contact me to learn more. More help is always welcome!"
Storck can be reached by phone at 920-982-8435 or by email at wstorck@newlondon.k12.wi.us.
