Iola-Scandy completes baseball sweep

Two of the Iola-Scandinavia baseball team’s three Central Wisconsin Conference-East wins this season have come against Manawa.

The Thunderbirds completed a season sweep of the Wolves April 25 with an 8-6 win at Taylor Field.

Iola-Scandinavia improved to 3-4 in CWC-East play and 4-5 overall with the win, while Manawa fell to 1-4.

Manawa took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, but the T-Birds answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and three more in the third.

The Wolves cut into the 7-1 deficit with two runs in the fourth, but the T-Birds added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the inning.

Manawa came up with its final three runs in the fifth.

Owen Wolberg led Iola-Scandinavia at the plate with two hits and a team-high three RBIs. Carter Melum and Ryan Thulien also had two of the T-Birds’ nine hits, while Parker Gullixon scored twice and Jayden Singh drove in a pair of runs.

Jackson Fredy scattered six hits over four innings to get the win on the mound.

Tanner Nienhaus led Manawa with three of his team’s 11 hits, while Fidel Patino added two hits and Dakota Stroud drove in a pair of runs.

Nienhaus struck out eight batters in five innings on the mound, but also took the loss.

Both teams have games scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 5. Iola-Scandinavia will host Marion, while Manawa will head to Kronenwetter to face Northland Lutheran.
