On Feb. 20, Waupaca County Sheriff's Deputy Dave Huberty was dispatched to the Northland Lutheran Church on State Highway 49 in the town of Harrison. When he arrived, Huberty learned that someone had broken into the church and removed a 3-foot by 3-foot metal safe.
The safe was later found dumped in a roadside ditch. It contained church records, but no money.
On Feb. 24, a burglary was reported at Schmidt's Corners on County Road C in the town of Harrison. Deputy Mark Goerlinger found that entry had been made by breaking out a sliding glass window. The cash till had been opened, but the coins had been left in the till.
On March 3, Deputies Nick Kahnke and Tim Myers responded to an alarm at the Country Inn bar on State 49 north of Waupaca.
Myers found that forced entry had been made through the back door to the kitchen. The owner reported that six bottles of liquor were missing.
Meanwhile, the Portage County Sheriff's Department was also investigating several burglaries. On March 8, Detective Josh Ostrowski went to Rosholt High School after the principal reported finding alcohol in Kieliszewski's car. The three teens eventually implicated each other, according to the criminal complaint.
