The hoop and the Harms

Posted

It was a valuable lesson for the New London boys’ basketball team in its nonconference matchup with Waupaca.

Give the Comets’ Ethan Harms an open look at a three-pointer, he will take the shot and probably score.

The Waupaca senior connected on four while scoring 14 straight points for the Comets on Feb. 18 in a nonconference game at Waupaca High School.
Those 14 points gave Waupaca a double-digit lead in the second half and the Comets won 82-74 over the Bulldogs.

The Comets scored the game’s first seven points, led by as many as nine points in the first half, and headed to the locker room at the break with a 35-28 lead.

The Bulldogs quickly cut that deficit to one point early in the second half with three-pointers from Joseph Daly and Ryan Dalhoe before another three-pointer from Brett Marquardt gave New London its first lead, 37-36.

The lead changed hands two more times before Harms gave the Comets the lead for good - 43-41 - with one of his seven three-pointers.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit to one point twice but didn’t get any closer.
Waupaca led 68-56 after Harms’ 14-point run and New London trailed by at least eight points the rest of the way.

Daly led all players with 25 points and Harms scored 18 of his team-high 24 points in the second half.

Austin Adamczak, Kanye Bessman and Westen Lauritzen also finished in double figures for Waupaca with 21, 14 and 13 points, respectively. Marquardt and Dalhoe added 18 and 11, respectively, for the Bulldogs.

Waupaca improved to 12-9 on the season and the Bulldogs fell to 9-12. The win also helped the Comets get a higher seed for the upcoming WIAA state tournament. The Comets are a No. 7 seed in Division 2 and will open tournament play on Tuesday, March 4, at home against No. 10 Menasha. The Bulldogs received a No. 9 seed and will hit the road that day to play eighth-seeded Tomah.
