Thunderbirds get back on track

Posted

One week after the Abbotsford football team held Iola-Scandinavia’s offense in check, the Thunderbirds responded in a big way in their next game.

The T-Birds scored touchdowns on its first six possessions Sept. 13 and cruised to a 41-0 win over Assumption at Thunderbird Field.

Iola-Scandinavia found the end zone three times in the first and second quarters. Jensen Rice opened the scoring with a 3-yard quarterback keeper, added a 51-yard touchdown run on the first play of the team’s second drive and hooked up with Korz Loken for a 6-yard scoring pass.

The T-Birds’ scores in the second quarter included Rice’s 15-yard pass to Billy Myers, a 44-yard run from Myers on the first play of the T-Birds’ fifth drive and Rice’s 2-yard pass to Loken.

Meanwhile, the Royals had trouble moving the ball. Assumption went three-and-out on its first four drives. Wylie Cornwell’s 54-yard quarterback keeper gave the Royals a first down at the T-Bird 11-yard line in the second quarter, but the drive ended after Rice intercepted Cornwell’s pass in the end zone on fourth down and returned it to the Assumption 45-yard line.
