The Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds dropped to 1-3 after a close and exciting game on the road against the Assumption Royals.
The Thunderbirds got up early on Assumption as quarterback Jensen Rice took a quarterback keeper 70 yards for a touchdown on the opening possession of the game and ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
The Royals responded with a 14-yard touchdown run to make the deficit 8-6.
Rice once again showed his speed picking through the Assumption defense to get a 59-yard touchdown run to put the Thunderbirds up 14-6.
Assumption would get down the field once again as a three-yard fullback dive would get them a score, and a keeper on the two-point conversion made the score 14-14.
Scoring slowed down in the second quarter as both defenses began to stop their opponents’ offenses.
The Royals took the lead in the third quarter as they drove down the field and scored on a two-yard quarterback keeper to go up 20-14.
Assumption broke open the game with a 47-yard touchdown run to give them a 26-14 lead.
A three-yard touchdown run by the Thunderbirds’ Aiden Bowen made the deficit 26-20.
The Thunderbirds would get the ball back with just under three minutes to work in the fourth quarter. Rice found wide receiver Dawson Nunz for a 61-yard catch and run to tie the score 26-26.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Thunderbirds squib kicked and Assumption recovered to set up on the Iola-Scandinavia 43-yard line with 2:12 left on the clock.
The Thunderbirds’ defense held up, forcing the game into overtime.
On the first play in overtime, the Thunderbirds fumbled to give Assumption the advantage.
Assumption methodically drove the ball as they powered in from five yards out to score and win 32-26.
