Truckers edge Waupaca wrestlers

Posted

The inability to have a 106-pound wrestler hurt the Waupaca wrestling team in its rematch with Clintonville.

Waupaca had handed the Truckers a 41-40 loss in December in the North Eastern Conference dual meet opener for both teams. They met again on Jan. 16 at Waupaca High School, but this time, the Truckers returned home with a 39-36 win that will not count in the conference standings. Both teams also dropped North Eastern duals to Freedom.

A double forfeit in the meet’s final match hurt the Comets.
If Waupaca had an available wrestler for that match at 106, the Comets would have picked up the win.

Pierce Karl gave the Comets an early 6-0 lead after pinning Kaleb Killips in 1:36 at 113.

The Truckers took the lead for good after the Comets forfeited the 120- and 126-pound matches.

Collin Hill added to the Truckers’ lead by pinning Ben Gietman in 1:36 at 132.

Waupaca cut the lead to 18-12 in the next match, as Ryan Grant pinned Myles Pluger in 1:00 at 138.

The Truckers answered with Landon Robenhagen’s 10-9 win over Brody Kane at 144, Ryan Huss’ pin of Matt Schmidt in 1:57 at 150, and a forfeit at 157 to take a 33-12 lead.

Noah Crane pinned Clintonville’s Jaydn Ebert in 3:56 at 165, Erik Castellanos pinned Waupaca’s Ian Johnson in 2:39 at 175, Clintonville forfeited the 190-pound match and Waupaca made things interesting with wins at 215 and 285, as Cooper Pate pinned Devin Huebner in 1:53 and Gavin Warren pinned Matthew Kriegel in 4:53.

Warren’s win cut the Truckers’ lead to 39-36 heading into the final match at 106.

The Irish dominated the three-team meet by outscoring the Comets and Truckers 146-9.

Clintonville’s three points came from Rogenhagen’s 7-5 win over Logan Peterseon at 144.

Freedom 70,
Waupaca 6

The Comets’ six points came on Karl’s 6-0 win over Jackson Williams in the first match at 106 and Dakota Thoma’s 8-6 win over Sam Moore at 190.
