Two area athletes named senior award finalists

Two area athletes have been named finalists for the Wisconsin Sports Network Senior Awards. The finalists were announced on March 13. The awards will be presented the week after the conclusion of the state basketball tournaments.

Hortonville’s Rainey Welson, a finalist for the Senior Girls’ Shooter award. Welson finished her season after a knee injury against Kimberly in the last few games but still averaged 26.4 points per game and was 37.8 percent from three-point range.

Welson amassed over 2,000 points in her career with 254 made three-pointers. Welson, a University of Maryland commitment, also averaged 5.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.4 steals in her season and grabbed over 400 rebounds, dished out 340 assists and 252 steals in her career.

Ayden Phillips of Almond-Bancroft is one of five finalists for the Senior Boys post-player award. Phillips, who stands 6 foot 7 inches, averaged 24.3 points per game, 14 rebounds per game, and 1.7 blocks per game this season for a team that made the State sectional finals. Phillips, who is also a standout on the gridiron, has committed to playing football for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire next fall. Phillips finished his career with over 2,400 points, 749 rebounds, and 276 blocks.
