Gerald Johnson will present "Clues in the Cloth: A Look at Quilts and Quilting Fabrics from 1850-1950". at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Holly Center, 321 S. Main St., Waupaca.
Hosted by the Waupaca Historical Society, the program is free and open to the public.
Johnson is an Iola resident who took up quilting when he was 9 years old. He is a fifth-generation quilter and all of his quilting is done by hand. Several years ago, he inherited a set of vintage quilt blocks from his grandmother. At that time he became interested in the study of vintage quilts, their textiles and dyes.
He began sharing his knowledge with others and has traveled throughout Wisconsin giving lectures to civic groups, church groups and historical societies.
Johnson will bring vintage quilt samples to showcase during his presentation, as he discusses the patterns and fabric that makes each vintage quilt unique.
Two or three vintage quilts from the collection housed at the Hutchinson House Museum will also be shown during the program.
Attendees to the program should not bring quilts from home because there will be no quilt appraisals.
