W-F girls pick up road win in Iola

Posted

An off-night from their leading scorer didn’t keep the Weyauwega-Fremont girls’ basketball team from picking up its sixth Central Wisconsin Conference-East win.

Olivia Witkowski came into the Warhawks’ Feb. 1 rematch against Iola-Scandinavia, averaging just over 20 points a game. Witkowski was held to six points, all her scoring in the first half.

However, other players picked up the slack, and the Warhawks headed home with a 44-33 win.

It looked like the Warhawks would have their way with the Thunderbirds as Weyauwega-Fremont built a 13-1 lead in the first half. Iola-Scandinavia cut the lead to seven points twice and trailed 28-19 at halftime.

The Thunderbirds opened the second half with consecutive baskets that cut the lead to 28-23 but never got closer.

Weyauwega-Fremont led by as many as 14 points in the second half.
Avery Samz and Elizabeth Koplien led the Warhawks with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

McKenzie Bonikowske led the Thunderbirds with eight points.
