Warhawks go 1-1 in state tournament

After facing a pair of familiar Central Wisconsin Conference-East opponents in the first two rounds of the WIAA state tournament, the season has ended for the Weyauwega-Fremont girls’ basketball team.
The Warhawks opened tournament play on Feb. 25 with a 50-37 home win over Iola-Scandinavia in a Division 4 regional quarterfinal, but their season ended three days later with a 60-42 loss to Bonduel on the Bears’ home court.

BONDUEL - Bonduel advanced to a regional championship on March 1 after beating the Warhawks for the third time this season.

The second-seeded Bears led 27-17 at halftime but outscored seventh-seeded Weyauwega-Fremont 33-25 in the second half.
Olivia Witkowski scored a team-high 23 points in her final basketball game for the Warhawks.

WEYAUWEGA - The Warhawks held the Thunderbirds to 13 points in the second half after winning both matchups during the regular season.

Witkowski had the hot hand for the Warhawks early, as she scored her team’s first eight points and scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in the first half.
The Thunderbirds trailed 31-24 at halftime and cut the lead to four early in the second half on a three-pointer from Ava Printz, but didn’t get any closer.
Avery Samz also finished in double figures for the Warhawks with 10 points, while Mckenzie Bonikowske and Printz led Iola-Scandinavia with 11 and nine, respectively.

Weyauwega-Fremont ended the season with an 11-14 record, while the Thunderbirds finished 9-14.
