Warhawks win CWC wrestling meet

The lower weights came up big for Weyauwega-Fremont at the Central Wisconsin Conference wrestling meet.

The Warhawks hosted the 10-team meet on Feb. 8, which had eight champions in the 14 weight classes, and won the tournament to go along with the team's 9-0 record in dual meets this season.

Jaydon LeNoble (106), Josue Azuara (113), Riley Scherg (120), Jake Buss (126), Carter Birdyshaw (138), Aiden Marquette (144)) Collin Hamm (150) and Connor Johnson (157) won individual championships for the Warhawks.

They weren’t the only local wrestlers to return home from their respective conference meet with a first-place finish, as Hortonville had three champions at the Fox Valley Association meet in Appleton, and Stevens Point had one at the Wisconsin Valley Conference meet in Wausau.

Cash Botting, Nolan Skebba and Austin McHugh placed first for Hortonville at Appleton East High School and Logan Seavers won Stevens Point’s championship at Wausau East High School.

WEYAUWEGA - Weyauwega-Fremont lived up to its No. 1 ranking in Division 3 and placed first in the overall team standings with 292 points, followed by Shiocton (227.5), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (183), Bonduel (118), Amherst (96.5), Pittsville (92.5), Rosholt (68.5), Menominee Nation (45.5), Manawa (12) and Tri-County (11).

Weyauwega-Fremont’s Trevor Potratz, in his first season as co-head coach with his father, Tim, was named the conference's coach of the year after the meet.

“It was a great performance from top to bottom for the Weyauwega-Fremont wrestling team, as they dominated the tournament,he said.

APPLETON - Botting, Skebba and McHugh placed first for the Polar Bears at 132, 150 and 215, respectively.

Also placing for Hortonville were Sam Ellerman, second (113); Ryan Agnew, sixth (120); Brady Xiong, fifth (126); Ethan Drury, fourth (138); Collin Schroeder, third (144); Kyle Agnew, fourth (157); Kael Konrad, sixth (165); Brock Schmidt, third (175); Jon Engelbert, fifth (190); and Henry Huza, third (285).

Kaukauna placed first in the team standings at Appleton East High School with 292.5 points, followed by Hortonville (192.5); Neenah (185.5); Kimberly and Oshkosh West (151.5); Appleton North (99.5); Appleton West (68.5); Fond du Lac (37); Appleton East (30); and Oshkosh North (20).

Wisconsin Valley

WAUSAU - Seavers won the 150-pound weight class for the Panthers’ only championship.

Also placing for Stevens Point were Eldon Roth, second (106); Fritz Beversdorf, sixth (113); Sam Riddle, fourth (120); Camden Mayek, fourth (126); Owen Mancl, fifth (132); Will Mlsna, fifth (138); Toby Klein, fourth (144); Jack Turner, fifth (157); Nathan Bernstein, fourth (165); Kyle Madlena, second (175); Josue Mata, seventh (190); Connor Skarsten, fifth (215); and Josh Woznicki, fourth (285).

Wisconsin Rapids won the meet with 220.5 points, followed by Marshfield (178), D.C. Everest (159), Wausau West (157), Stevens Point (149), Merrill (138) and Wausau East (64).

Three other area wrestling teams - Waupaca, Clintonville and New London - did not compete on Feb. 8, as the North Eastern and Bay conferences do not hold a conference meet.

The road to the WIAA state individual and team championships for boys will begin Saturday, Feb. 15, with regional competitions in three divisions.

Hortonville and Stevens Point will compete in Division 1; Waupaca, Amherst, New London and Clintonville are in Division 2; and Weyauwega-Fremont and Manawa are in Division 3.

Hortonville and Stevens Point will head to the Wisconsin Rapids Regional, and sectional qualifiers will advance to a sectional Saturday, Feb. 22, in Menasha.

New London will host a Division 2 regional that will include Waupaca, Amherst and Clintonville. Sectional qualifiers will head to a sectional in Seymour.

Weyauwega-Fremont and Manawa will head to regionals in Omro and Crandon, respectively. Sectional qualifiers from both regionals will head to a sectional in Valders.

Regional meets for girls will be held on Friday, Feb. 14, while sectionals are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21.

Wrestlers from Amherst, Clintonville, Hortonville, Manawa, New London, Waupaca and Weyauwega-Fremont will head to regionals at Wausau West High School, and sectional qualifiers will compete in Shawano.

The state individual meet for boys and girls will be held Thursday to Saturday, Feb. 27 to March 1, at the Kohl Center in Madison.
