At the Wega Duels on Dec. 13 the Weyauwega-Fremont Warhawks were able to get some key early season wins including a victory in a rematch of the 2025 WIAA state championship.

The Warhawks wrestling team earned a hard-fought victory over Mineral Point in a dual meet that featured multiple falls, technical falls, and close decisions across the lineup.

The meet opened at 106 pounds, where Trigg Riley of Mineral Point secured a technical fall over Grant Baehnman, winning 15-0 in three minutes to give Mineral Point an early advantage. The Warhawks responded quickly at 113 pounds as Memphis Burkhalter pinned Zander Baehnman at the 2:34 mark, swinging momentum back in Weyauwega-Fremont’s favor.

Weyauwega-Fremont continued its surge at 120 and 126 pounds. Josue Azuara earned a fall over Boden Chambers in 2:17, followed by Rylan Konen’s dominant 19-3 technical fall against Johnny Robinson. Mineral Point answered at 132 pounds when Liam Carey pinned DeWayne Borntreger in just 43 seconds.

At 138 pounds, the Warhawks Jake Buss earned a 4-0 decision over Samuel Springer. Mineral Point picked up another key win at 144 pounds as Mason Scullion posted a 17-4 major decision over Logan McDaniel. The back-and-forth action continued at 150 pounds, where Weyauwega-Fremont freshman Camden Stichman edged Easton Brunett by a narrow 7-6 decision.

Mineral Point’s Emmett Collins won a close 8-6 decision over Carter Birdyshaw at 157 pounds, but Warhawks regained control in the upper weights. Collin Hamm earned a 19-3 technical fall at 165 pounds, and Zander Bayer followed with a 20-2 technical fall over Brady Haas at 175.

Weyauwega-Fremont added valuable team points with back-to-back forfeits at 190 and 215 pounds. The final bout at 285 pounds saw Mineral Point’s Tyler Vondra close the night with a fall over Jared Bohringer at 3:59.

Despite Mineral Point’s strong individual performances and several closely contested matches, Weyauwega-Fremont’s depth and bonus-point victories proved decisive, allowing them to secure the overall dual meet win 38-30.
