If there’s a silver lining from the Waupaca boys’ basketball team’s North Eastern Conference opener, the Comets only have to face Ethan Cyra once more this season.
The Wrightstown senior scored a game-high, 32 points on Dec. 6 and helped lead the Tigers to a 52-43 win on the Comets’ home court.
Waupaca trailed the entire game and faced an 8-0 deficit in the opening minutes.
The Tigers led by as many as 14 points in the first half and held the Comets to a pair of baskets until the final minute. Aaron Wolff’s three-pointer and a basket from Austin Adamczak cut the Tigers’ lead to 22-11 at the break.
Cyra’s three-pointer midway through the second half gave Wrightstown its biggest lead - 33-17 - before a 14-3 run made it a two-possession game. Ethan Harms’ three-pointer cut the Tigers’ lead to 36-31 with 6:20 to go. Another three from Harms brought Waupaca to within five points with just under four minutes remaining. The Comets never got any closer down the stretch.
Cyra scored 12 of the Tigers’ final 14 points as the Comets fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Adamczak and Harms led the Comets with 17 and 10 points, respectively.
Waupaca opened with five straight road games on Dec. 10 at Freedom. The Comets will then wrap up their December schedule by traveling to Denmark, Marinette, Oconto Falls and Winneconne. The Comets do not have another home game scheduled until Clintonville heads to Waupaca on Friday, Jan. 3.
