If everything falls into place, the Waupaca baseball team won’t have to leave town for the upcoming WIAA state tournament.
The Comets are a No. 1 seed in the Division 2 Waupaca Sectional. Waupaca has a bye in the first round Thursday, May 26, and will host No. 4 Little Chute or No. 5 Xavier at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, in a regional semifinal.
A regional final win Wednesday, June 1, means the Comets would host a sectional semifinal game at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 7. The sectional final will be held at 5 p.m. that day, also on the Comets’ home field.
Here’s a rundown of where other area teams will open the tournament:
Division 1
Hortonville and New London are in the Kaukauna Sectional. Hortonville is a No. 4 seed and has a bye in the first round May 31. The Polar Bears will host No. 5 Manitowoc or No. 12 Appleton West Thursday, June 2. New London is a No. 11 seed and will open the tournament at 4 p.m. May 31 at No. 6 De Pere. The sectional final is set for 4 p.m. June 7 in Kaukauna.
Division 2
Clintonville is a No. 4 seed in the Waupaca Sectional and will host No. 5 Peshtigo May 26.
Division 3
No. 2 Amherst, No. 3 Iola-Scandinavia, No. 4 Weyauwega-Fremont and No. 6 Manawa are in the Stevens Point Sectional. I-S will host Manawa and W-F will host No. 5 Auburndale at 4:30 p.m. May 26. Amherst will host the I-S/Manawa winner at 4:30 p.m. May 31. The sectional final will be played at 6 p.m. June 7 at Bukolt Park in Stevens Point.
Division 4
Almond-Bancroft is a No. 1 seed in the Johnson Creek Sectional, while Wild Rose is seeded fourth. A-B has a bye May 26 and will host No. 5 Hilbert/Stockbridge or Wild Rose May 31. Wild Rose will host Hilbert/Stockbridge at 4:30 p.m. May 26. The sectional final is set for 2 p.m. June 7 in Johnson Creek.
Marion is a No. 7 seed in the Rosholt Sectional. The Mustangs will open tournament play at 4:30 p.m. May 26 at No. 2 Rosholt. The sectional final will be played at 4:30 p.m. June 7 in Rosholt.
