Waupaca loses opener after weather delay

Posted

The Waupaca Comets hosted the Oconto Falls Panthers on Aug, 21 in the season opener.

A weather delay at the end of the first quarter due to lightning in the area postponed the matchup for nearly an hour on Friday night, but play resumed as the skies began to clear.

Oconto Falls scored the first points of the game in the second quarter on a 48-yard touchdown run by Croix Gardebrecht to make the score 7-0.

Jack Falkowski scored Oconto Falls’ second touchdown when he took a handoff and bounced it outside for an 11-yard run into the end zone to make it 13-0.

A fumble recovery would give the Comets some momentum, but they could not push the ball down the field offensively.

Oconto Falls went up 20-0 in the third quarter as they went down the field to the Waupaca goal line and Gardebrecht punched it in for his second touchdown of the night.

Levi Mommaerts gave possession right back to the Panthers as he intercepted a pass and set Oconto Falls up at the Waupaca 22-yard line.

Fullback Aiden Cahak caught a pass that he took 25 yards for a score, and Oconto Falls went up 27-0.

Waupaca would score their first touchdown of the game as Erik Harms threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Johnson and made the deficit 27-7.

Oconto Falls would regain the 27-point lead later in the fourth quarter as Nathaniel White got into the end zone on a quarterback sneak from the one-yard line to make the score 34-7.

JJ Peterson scored on a 32-yard touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter for Waupaca as they fell 34-14 and began their season 0-1
